History

Baidaphon was founded by five members of the Baida family of Beirut, who contracted around 1906 for a German to manufacture records. Soon afterwards they opened a small record shop in downtown Beirut. The company began to record local talent, aided by the European engineers who made regular recording trips to the area. "It was probably only a matter of months before the company recorded in Egypt and the rest of the Middle East."

The company set up a branch in Cairo 1914 and began marketing a wide variety of Arabic music available, including Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian repertory. They also published recordings by the cantor Albert Pincas, detailed in the June, 1928 catalog below.
